Suomi School and Suomi Club

The Suomi School and Suomi Club promote the Finnish language and culture through education and group activity. Familiarity with the Finnish language and culture strengthens the identity of the children of bilingual families, especially those of Irish-Finnish origin. The Suomi School and Suomi Club also act as a forum that enables Finnish families in Ireland to meet.

Suomi School

The Suomi School in Dublin educates children between the ages of 7 and 15 who already understand Finnish. The purpose of Suomi School is to:

  • support the learning of the Finnish language in bilingual families and to strengthen Finnish identity
  • promote knowledge of Finnish affairs, as well as the history, geography and culture of Finland
  • offer Finnish language education to children, young people and adults

Suomi Club

The Suomi Club in Dublin serves children no older than 6 and their parents. The club offers children the chance to play, sing, do crafts, etc. in Finnish. The Suomi Club acts as a forum that enables Finnish parents to meet.

How the School and Club work

The Suomi School and Suomi Club take place approximately every second weekend for 1 ½ - 2 hours at a time. Attendance at the School or Club is voluntary and there is a small fee to cover the material costs. The fee for the Suomi School is 5 euros/pupil/lesson. Suomi Club is free for members of the Irish Finnish Society. Both the School and the Club also receive financial support from the Ministry of Education and Culture in Finland.
